Why age is not simply days divided by 365

Calendar age must account for months of different lengths and leap years. Dividing the number of elapsed days by 365 can produce an approximate decimal age, but it does not reliably give the exact completed years, months and days used on applications and official forms.

Completed age

Your age in completed years changes on your birthday, which is commonly used for eligibility rules.

Age on a past date

Change the target date to check how old someone was on an examination, policy or historical date.

Next birthday

The countdown helps with planning milestones while respecting the actual calendar month lengths.

For legal, school, insurance or government purposes, always enter the date exactly as recorded on the relevant identity or birth document.

How it works

How to use the age calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth

Pick the exact date from the calendar field.

  2. Set the "as of" date

Leave it as today for your current age, or change it to check your age on any exam, scheme or eligibility cut‑off date.

  3. Read your results

See your exact age in years, months and days, along with total days lived and a countdown to your next birthday.

Understanding age calculation

Why exact age matters

Most people know their age only in round years, but many official processes in India — government exam eligibility (UPSC, SSC, state PSCs), passport applications, school admissions and insurance policies — require your exact age as of a specific cut‑off date, not just your age today. A single day can change your eligibility bracket.

This calculator finds the precise difference between two calendar dates, correctly carrying over month and year boundaries and accounting for leap years, so the years/months/days figure you get matches how age is computed on official forms.

Common uses for an age calculator

  • Checking eligibility for government exams with a fixed age cut‑off date.
  • Confirming a child's age for school admission cut‑offs.
  • Working out age for insurance premium calculations.
  • Simply satisfying curiosity — total days or weeks lived is a fun number to know.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age?

Enter your date of birth and the date to calculate your age as of. The calculator returns your age in complete years, months and days.

Can I calculate my age as of a future or past date?

Yes — this helps check eligibility for exams or schemes that specify an age as of a fixed cut-off date, such as 1st July of the exam year.

Does it handle leap years correctly?

Yes, the calculator works on real calendar dates, so leap years and 29th February birthdays are handled automatically.

What's the difference between age in years and total days lived?

Age in years counts only completed years. Total days lived is the exact count of calendar days since your date of birth, including every leap day in between.
